Iron deficiency affects about two billion people around the world , and recent research has showed that iron deficiency may be a risk factor for stroke . However, it is technically still unknown how iron deficiency may increase the risk of stroke .
" Because of platelets in the blood from sticking together if you are iron deficient , we thought this might explain that iron deficiency can lead to stroke , although further studies are needed to prove this relationship , " said Dr. Claire Shovlin , from the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial college London .
" The next step is to test whether we can reduce the likelihood of high-risk patients with stroke will overcome iron- deficient . We will be able to see whether they become less sticky platelets , " Shovlin said .
" There are still some additional steps from a clot blocking a blood vessel can progress to the last step , so it is still unclear which influence platelet stickiness for keseluruhanan process , " he added . " We would certainly encourage more study to investigate this relationship . "
